How the disciples receive the Holy Ghost
·
The gift of the Spirit is given to the disciples
by the laying on of hands
·
The disciples must bear witness of Christ as
well
·
The disciples must know him
After the Savior’s death, the Holy Ghost was not just a blessing
to the disciples personally but also those they ministered to. We cannot
receive a testimony and witness of Jesus Christ except by the Holy Ghost. I’ve
come to better understand that as I go out teaching with the missionaries as
often as I can. They can talk all they want and try to convince the people
around them that what they are saying is true but it’s not until the Spirit
touches their hearts can they fully accept the gospel. Obviously this makes it
important in not only the disciple’s ministry but also any sort of missionary
work.
It’s so hard not only to find just one time the Holy Ghost
has blessed me but also to adequately relay that experience into words. I could
sit and tell you all day that I feel blessed by having the Spirit in my life but
that’s not very helpful without any specific examples. One example though that
has always stuck out to me which deals with the bullet point,“He instructs and
enlightens those who obey the commandments.” It has probably been about 10
years since this happened but I can still remember it so vividly. I had gone
with my mom to a baptism of a girl my age I didn’t know. There was a violin
recital that my teacher was in that we were going to go to as soon as the
baptismal service was over. As my mom and I pulled out of the parking lot I got
this feeling of just being sick to my stomach and I had a distinct impression
that we needed to stay at the baptism and miss the recital. Luckily my mom had
the same impression and asked me if I thought we should stay. Although I didn’t
want to I knew I had to stay. It’s funny that you can get a sick feeling like
that and attribute it to something you’re supposed to do. What ended up
happening is I became good friends with this girl and helped her through some
trials in her life for a short time before she moved. Had I not stayed I don’t
know that I would’ve been able to be a blessing her life.
I have had many more experiences since then and I know that
the Holy Ghost is real and can bless our lives even more than we can comprehend.
I have gained a testimony through his witness as I have prayed, read my
scriptures, and tried my best to listen. I know that anyone who wants to
experience these blessings can, as they search and pray with an open heart and
a sincere desire.
